Aveda was founded in 1978 by world-class hairstylist Horst Rechelbacher, with the vision to provide beauty professionals with botanical products that would be good for them, their guests, and the Earth. The name “Aveda” comes from Ayurveda, the traditional Hindu system of holistic wellness based on balance between body, mind and soul.

Since 1993, Aveda has worked with members of the Yawanawá Tribe in Brazil, in order to source their products. For their help and partnership, Aveda has helped to protect their land, preserving 450k acres of rainforest from deforestation. Aveda also provides clean water, sanitation, and hygiene to the tribe. In addition to a sustainable food security program and school funding.
